Here are some areas to consider:

  • Clothes
  • Food/pantry
  • Books, Files
  • Objects
  • Digital

In the Kon-Mari method – you put all items of one type together so truly face it all. E.g. all the books you own, gather from all the rooms in your home and pile them up. Then pick up each object and hold it and ask yourself – does it give me joy? Yes? Keep it. No, sell it/donate it/throw it away. I was amazed by the memories – positive and negative – I had associated with clothing, books etc.

Alternatively, if it’s hard to figure out the time needed for this, do it room by room, but commit to the process! An example I find that works for me is this: I will choose the kitchen. One day I will do that kitchen drawer. The next I will do the pans cupboard and the cutlery drawer. Another time I will do the pantry. I pick a discrete area that I can complete in the time I have. Put on a podcast and GET TO IT!
